Thursday May 24, 2012
Luke Talbott from Compass Outdoor Adventures put on a pair
of headphones with us in the studio this week as we talked about his exciting
organizations. A teacher of ten years, Luke decided that kids weren’t being
challenged enough, they weren’t able to fail in a safe and constructive
environment, so he created Compass Outdoor Adventures to give kids that chance.
We discussed the problems with bubble wrapping out children versus letting them
fail and learn with grace and support. As Luke told us, “You have to have the
ability to fall.”

Free and open to the public - kids especially welcome!
First Book-Seattle and Elliott Bay Book Company will be co-sponsoring "What Was Your First Book?", a lively Read-A-Thon of local community members taking turns reading aloud the very first children's book they each fell in love with. Our featured readers will include author Sherman Alexie, a Seattle Monorail driver, Seattle Police officers, Seattle Fire Department, Rat City Rollergirls, an Overlake High School student, an Air Force fighter pilot, a Seattle Public Librarian, and others!!
We'll also have a silent auction of beloved kids' books inscribed by Mayor Mike McGinn, Senator Patty Murray, local authors, and other local celebrities, as well as a raffle of gift baskets for kids, sports lovers, spa lovers, and cooks.
Our goal with this Read-A-Thon is to give six new books to every child in twenty Title 1 classrooms in King County. You can give six new books to one child for $15; an entire classroom of 22 children will receive six new books for $330. Each featured readers is raising pledge donations to help us meet our goal. Will you make a pledge donation on behalf of one of our readers?
